Romanian riders propose motorcycle-friendly laws

Romanian motorcyclists – together with parliamentarians – launched a legislative initiative for the development of motorcycling and increasing road safety.

The proposal, originally launched by motorcyclists’ association MotoADN (a member of FEMA) at the EXPO MOTO Bucharest, reached parliamentarians who understood it and decided to support it. Together with the legal initiators of the bill, MotoADN submitted the document that will hopefully soon make the lives of motorcyclists and scooter users safer and easier. Only with the parliamentarians help and involvement did MotoADN manage to very quickly reach the step where the motorcyclists’ wishes are a legislative initiative, not just a petition.

‘With a motorcycle you get to your destination faster, with a smile on your face, and cause less congestion and pollution’

Among the requests addressed to central and local authorities, MotoADN mentioned:

  • Access for motorcycles and scooters on the lane dedicated to public transport;
  • Creating new parking spaces dedicated to motorcycles and scooters;
  • Access between lanes when vehicles are stopped in a traffic jam (filtering);
  • An area at traffic light intersections, dedicated for the safe stopping of motorcycles and scooters (advanced stop lines).

Ionuț Moșteanu, Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament and supporter of this legislative project, said: “We decided to do a joint project and we all want to make motorcycle travel increasingly popular and safer. With a motorcycle you get to your destination faster, with a smile on your face, and cause less congestion and pollution. Some measures are foreseen in this project aimed at increasing road safety for motorcyclists, which require some absolutely necessary infrastructure changes to properly divide the road between motorcyclists and drivers.”

Răzvan Pavel, President of motoADN, pointed out: “A Belgian study shows that if 10% of drivers gave up their cars, then the waiting time in traffic could decrease by 40%. For various logistical reasons, some drivers cannot give up their cars to go on a scooter every day. However, it is very important for Romanian drivers to understand that, if they encourage those who use scooters, they will also save time in traffic.”

Răzvan Pavel, President of motoADN, also said: “Expo MOTO Bucharest 2025 was the starting point, because it promoted our approach to all 20,000 visitors and managed to draw attention to the project. The press conference at the opening of the event was, in fact, the first moment in which the politicians present expressed their desire to support this legislative project aimed at supporting the development of Romanian motorcycling. We thank the entire motorcycle community for their involvement. It is another example that demonstrates that together we are a force and a voice that is heard. Political support is essential to carry out the projects that we know can support the development of motorcycling in Romania.”

With the help of the parliamentarians, MotoADN will move on to the next steps necessary to transform a legislative initiative into an approved and implemented law.
