Swedish motorcyclists happy with stop on electric roads

The Swedish Transport Administration stops investment in electric roads – Swedish motorcyclists want more investments in road maintenance.

The Swedish Transport Administration has decided not to invest in a major expansion of electric roads in Sweden, as it is not economically viable with today’s conditions. Rapid development of battery technology has reduced the need for electric roads, and the Swedish Transport Administration has also paused the project for Sweden’s first permanent electric road on the E20 between Hallsberg and Örebro.

Sweden’s motorcyclists’ association SMC – a member of FEMA – reacted positively to this decision: “For us, it is important that the Swedish Transport Administration now focuses on improving the actual road conditions, where there are still great needs. We hope that the resources that will no longer be used for electric roads can now be reallocated to better road maintenance and safety measures, including measures for motorcyclist safety. Every day motorcyclists are exposed to risks on roads with poor maintenance, road damage and lack of road signs, and SMC now hopes that the Swedish Transport Administration prioritizes these urgent needs, which in that case will contribute to increased road safety for all road users.
